Homework Helper with Guardrails

Set up AI homework help that guides your kid to answers without giving them away — Socratic method enforced by system prompts.

Scenario

Your kid discovered ChatGPT and now copy-pastes homework answers. You don't want to ban AI entirely — you want to teach them to use it as a thinking partner, not an answer machine.

Tools

  • Socratic tutor prompt — 'You are a homework helper for a 10-year-old. NEVER give the answer directly. Instead: (1) ask what they already know, (2) give a hint that narrows the problem, (3) if they're close, confirm their reasoning. If they ask you to just tell them, say: I believe in you — let's figure it out together.'
  • Problem breakdown prompt — 'Break this problem into 3 smaller steps. Tell my child what step 1 is and wait for them to try it.'
  • Parent summary — After the session: 'Summarize what my child worked on, what they struggled with, and what they understood. One paragraph.'

Outcome

Kid still uses AI for homework — but now it's a thinking tool, not a cheat sheet. Parent gets a summary to discuss at dinner.
